Bio: Dr Almantas Maleckas is a senior bariatric and general surgeon with over 35 years of clinical experience, recognised as a leading figure in minimally invasive and metabolic surgery in Europe. His profile combines exceptional surgical volume, academic leadership and international training, positioning him as one of the most experienced specialists in the treatment of obesity and complex gastrointestinal conditions.
He obtained his medical degree from Kaunas University of Medicine in 1991 and completed his surgical training in general and abdominal surgery in the mid-1990s. He went on to earn a PhD in Medical Sciences in 2000 and later completed an MSc in Health Economics, Policy and Management at the London School of Economics, reflecting a broader engagement with healthcare systems and outcomes.
Dr Maleckas has performed more than 7,000 bariatric procedures, placing him among the highest-volume surgeons in the region. He is widely recognised as a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery in the Baltics, having played a key role in the introduction and development of minimally invasive techniques that are now standard practice.
