Mr Mark Portelli is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon specialising in lower limb surgery, with UK-accredited training and a balanced profile across clinical practice, teaching and research. His work focuses particularly on foot and ankle surgery while maintaining broader expertise in hip and knee procedures. He trained in Malta before completing higher specialist training in Oxford, and holds multiple internationally recognised qualifications, including Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS Edin), Fellowship in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCSEd Tr&Orth) and certification from the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (FEBOT). These credentials reflect a high standard of surgical training aligned with both UK and European systems. Appointed as a Consultant in 2016, Mr Portelli established Malta’s dedicated Foot and Ankle service, developing a specialist programme for the management of ligament injuries, deformities and complex ankle conditions. He currently serves as a lead consultant at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta’s main teaching hospital, and at Saint James Hospital, combining public sector and private clinical practice within a structured care environment. His clinical scope includes hip and knee arthroplasty, knee and ankle arthroscopy, ankle ligament reconstruction and corrective surgery for foot deformities. His approach is centred on restoring mobility and function through precise surgical technique and tailored treatment planning. In addition to his clinical work, he is a Visiting Assistant Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Malta and has contributed to peer-reviewed medical publications, reflecting ongoing engagement with academic and professional development.
