Prof. dr. Antanas Mickevičius

Prof. Dr Antanas Mickevičius, MD, PhD, is one of Lithuania's foremost abdominal surgeons. Internationally recognised for his expertise in bariatric and metabolic surgery, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and advanced laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery, he has more than three decades of clinical, academic and research experience. He is regarded as one of the Baltic region's leading authorities on obesity surgery and oesophageal disorders, combining high-volume clinical practice with distinguished academic leadership and international collaboration. Prof. Mickevičius graduated in Medicine from the Kaunas Medical Institute in 1987 before completing specialist training in General Surgery. He was awarded his Doctor of Medical Sciences (PhD) in 1993 and, in 2008, became Professor of Surgery at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), where he has played a leading role in undergraduate and postgraduate surgical education. Throughout his career he has undertaken advanced specialist training in upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery in Sweden and the United Kingdom, establishing an international reputation in the surgical management of obesity and reflux disease. His principal clinical interests include bariatric and metabolic surgery, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, revisional bariatric surgery, anti-reflux surgery, hiatal hernia repair, upper gastrointestinal surgery and complex abdominal procedures. He is recognised as one of Lithuania's pioneers in minimally invasive bariatric surgery and has performed several thousand advanced laparoscopic procedures during his career. His practice is centred on delivering durable long-term outcomes through multidisciplinary assessment, evidence-based surgery and comprehensive postoperative follow-up. Alongside his clinical work, Prof. Mickevičius has built an outstanding academic career. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications and contributed extensively to research in obesity, GERD, upper gastrointestinal surgery and minimally invasive techniques. He has supervised doctoral researchers, lectured widely at international congresses and has been actively involved in numerous European collaborative research projects. His scientific work has helped shape modern approaches to bariatric and reflux surgery throughout Lithuania and the wider Baltic region. Prof. Mickevičius is an active member of several national and international surgical societies and has held leadership positions promoting advances in gastrointestinal and metabolic surgery.
