About
Prof. habil. Dr Narūnas Porvaneckas, MD, PhD, Habil. Dr., is an internationally recognised authority in hip and knee reconstruction. Born on 8 January 1955, he has devoted almost five decades to orthopaedic surgery and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern joint replacement surgery in the Baltic region. He combines exceptional clinical experience with an outstanding academic career, making him one of Lithuania's leading experts in complex hip and knee arthroplasty, adult hip dysplasia and revision joint replacement surgery.
Prof. Porvaneckas graduated in Medicine from the Kaunas Medical Institute in 1978. Between 1981 and 1986 he worked as a surgeon at the Latvian Research Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and later at St Jacob's Hospital in Riga, where he developed advanced expertise in reconstructive orthopaedic surgery. He returned to Lithuania in 1987 and joined Vilnius University, becoming a consultant at the Republican Vilnius University Emergency Hospital in 1991. Since 2003 he has also practised at Meliva Kardiolita Hospital, while from 2004 to 2019 he served as Head of the Orthopaedics Department at the Republican Vilnius University Hospital and Director of the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Centre of Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine. He was awarded his Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in 1985, achieved the distinction of Habilitated Doctor in Biomedical Sciences in 2002 and was appointed Professor in 2006. He further broadened his expertise through specialist fellowships at Yale University in 1990 and the Orthopaedic Clinic of the Free University of Berlin in 1991.
His principal clinical interests include primary and revision hip replacement, knee replacement, adult hip dysplasia, complex arthroplasty, femoral neck fractures and reconstructive surgery of the major joints. Throughout his career he has performed several thousand hip and knee replacement procedures and is recognised nationally for managing the most complex referral cases. His practice combines meticulous surgical planning, evidence-based implant selection and enhanced rehabilitation protocols to maximise implant longevity and patient mobility.
Alongside his clinical practice, Prof. Porvaneckas has established an exceptional academic reputation. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications, which have attracted over 430 academic citations, and is the author of the specialist textbook Hip Joint Arthroplasty (2008) as well as co-author of the Family Health Encyclopaedia (2009). His research has focused principally on large joint arthroplasty, adult hip dysplasia and orthopaedic biomechanics. He has supervised postgraduate training, lectured extensively throughout Europe and remains Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University.
Prof. Porvaneckas has served as Vice-President of the Lithuanian Society of Orthopaedic Traumatologists, is a member of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT), the European Society for Hip Surgery and the Scientific Council of the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine at Vilnius University. His career has been defined by sustained leadership in clinical practice, education and research over nearly half a century.
