About

Dr Manuel Díaz Samada is one of Spain's most distinguished trauma surgeons with more than 40 years of specialist clinical experience. He is widely recognised as a pioneer of arthroscopic surgery in Spain and an authority on sports traumatology, knee reconstruction and minimally invasive joint surgery. Throughout his career he has combined clinical excellence, academic leadership and international collaboration, earning a reputation as one of Andalucía's foremost orthopaedic surgeons. Dr Díaz graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Seville in 1979 before completing his specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology at Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena, Seville, between 1979 and 1982. In 1983, he undertook advanced fellowship training in knee surgery and arthroscopy at Hôpital Tripode in Bordeaux under Professor Jean-Paul Sénégas, one of Europe's leading pioneers of knee reconstruction. He further consolidated his academic credentials in 1987 with a doctoral thesis entitled Arthroscopy of the Knee, reflecting his early commitment to advancing minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery. Over more than four decades, Dr Díaz has become one of Spain's leading specialists in knee arthroscopy, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscal surgery, total knee replacement, shoulder arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, ankle arthroscopy and the treatment of sports injuries. Between 1989 and 2018, he served as Head of the Knee and Arthroscopy Unit at the Instituto Malagueño de Traumatología y Medicina del Deporte (IMATDE), before becoming Head of the Institute and Head of Orthopaedics for HM Hospitales Málaga in 2018. His practice combines minimally invasive techniques with modern rehabilitation protocols designed to reduce postoperative pain, accelerate recovery and optimise long-term functional outcomes. Dr Díaz has made an exceptional contribution to orthopaedic education and professional leadership. He served as President of the Spanish Arthroscopy Association (AEA) from 2005 to 2007, later directing its Education Committee, and chaired the Association's National Congresses in 1993 and 2004. He also served on the Executive Committee of the Latin American Society of Knee and Sports Surgery (SLARD) between 2006 and 2009. Throughout his career he has delivered invited lectures at national and international congresses and authored numerous scientific publications on arthroscopic surgery and sports traumatology. His contribution to orthopaedic practice has been recognised through repeated Top Doctors Awards in 2015, 2016 and 2021. Within the MMG network, Dr Díaz represents a flagship orthopaedic surgeon, offering patients more than four decades of consultant experience, internationally recognised expertise in arthroscopic and reconstructive joint surgery, and access to consultant-led treatment within HM Málaga's advanced multidisciplinary orthopaedic service.
