Dr. Iván Baamonde de la Torre

Dr Iván Baamonde de la Torre is a specialist in minimally invasive, bariatric and metabolic surgery. His practice combines advanced laparoscopy, robotic surgery and multidisciplinary obesity care, with particular expertise in gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, antireflux surgery, gallbladder surgery, colorectal procedures and abdominal wall reconstruction. He also treats complex digestive disorders requiring consultant-led surgical assessment and structured postoperative follow-up. Dr Baamonde graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra before completing specialist training in General and Digestive Surgery. He broadened his international experience through a clinical rotation in the Department of Surgery at the University Hospital Centre of Nîmes in France. He has also completed advanced training in laparoscopic and robotic techniques and is accredited to operate using the da Vinci robotic surgical system. Alongside his work at HM Modelo, Dr Baamonde is associated with the General and Digestive Surgery service at the Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de Ferrol and with the Galician Health Service’s endocrine pathophysiology research group. His clinical interests include severe obesity, gastro-oesophageal reflux, gallstone disease, colorectal cancer and complex abdominal surgery. His approach prioritises minimally invasive procedures where appropriate to reduce surgical trauma, postoperative discomfort and length of hospital stay. Dr Baamonde also has an established academic and research profile. He has published 11 scientific publications spanning bariatric surgery, colorectal complications, gastric disease and laparoscopic treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts. His work has appeared in journals including Obesity Surgery, Cirugía Española and the World Journal of Gastroenterology. He has also written patient education articles explaining modern surgical options for morbid obesity. Within the MMG network, Dr Baamonde offers patients experienced consultant-led care in laparoscopic, robotic and bariatric surgery, supported by HM Modelo’s multidisciplinary facilities.
