Dr Albert Miralles Cassina is one of Spain's most distinguished cardiac surgeons, with more than 35 years of experience in complex adult cardiac surgery. As well as being the Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at HM Nou Delfos, he is Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Bellvitge University Hospital, one of Spain's leading tertiary referral centres for cardiovascular medicine. Internationally recognised for his expertise in valvular heart surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), aortic surgery and advanced heart failure surgery, he has also developed extensive experience in heart transplantation, ventricular assist devices and artificial heart implantation. Dr Miralles graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1984 before undertaking specialist training in cardiovascular surgery at the internationally renowned La Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital in Paris between 1985 and 1990. During his training in France, he also qualified in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery through the Paris Medical Council and was awarded the prestigious Collège Français de Chirurgie Thoracique et Cardio-Vasculaire qualification. In 1999 he became a Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (FETCS), one of Europe's highest professional accreditations in cardiac surgery. Throughout his career, Dr Miralles has specialised in complex cardiac procedures, including mitral and aortic valve repair and replacement using biological and mechanical prostheses, off-pump arterial coronary artery bypass surgery, thoracic aortic aneurysm surgery, ventricular assist device implantation and heart transplantation. In addition to his role at HM Nou Delfos, he practises at several leading hospitals in Barcelona and has led the Cardiac Surgery Department at Bellvitge University Hospital since 2013, overseeing one of Spain's most experienced cardiac surgical units. Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Miralles has made substantial contributions to academic cardiac surgery. He has served as an Associate Professor of Surgery at Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI), was President of the Catalan Society of Cardiac Surgery between 2009 and 2011, and has participated in numerous cardiovascular research projects. His academic output includes more than 55 peer-reviewed scientific publications, over 130 presentations at national and international congresses, and significant contributions to the fields of heart transplantation, aortic surgery and mechanical circulatory support.
