Hospital Universitario HM Madrid Río is a modern general medical and surgical hospital located in Madrid’s central Arganzuela district. Opened on 14 October 2024 following an investment of €55 million, it forms part of HM Hospitales, one of Spain’s leading private healthcare groups, and provides advanced consultant-led care to Spanish and international patients.

The hospital delivers services across major medical and surgical specialties, including orthopaedics and traumatology, general and digestive surgery, gynaecology, urology, cardiology, vascular surgery, dermatology and advanced endoscopy. Bio: Dr José Perea García, MD, PhD, is one of Spain's foremost experts in colorectal cancer, minimally invasive digestive surgery and translational cancer research. As well as his role at HM Madrid Rio, he also serves as Medical Director of the Instituto Quirúrgico Digestivo (IQD), leading a multidisciplinary team specialising in advanced colorectal surgery, proctology and digestive disease. With more than 20 years of consultant experience, he combines high-volume surgical practice with an internationally distinguished academic career. Dr Perea graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1997 before completing his MIR specialist training in General and Digestive Surgery at Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón between 1998 and 2003. He subsequently completed a Diploma in Clinical Research Methodology at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and a Master's Degree in Molecular Oncology at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO). In 2009, he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (PhD) by the University of Salamanca with the distinction of Sobresaliente Cum Laude for pioneering research into early-onset colorectal cancer. His clinical practice focuses on laparoscopic and minimally invasive colorectal surgery, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, abdominal wall surgery and advanced proctology, including the treatment of complex anal fistulas, haemorrhoids and pelvic floor disorders. He employs the latest minimally invasive techniques to reduce postoperative pain, shorten recovery times and optimise long-term functional outcomes. Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Perea is Professor of Surgery at the European University of Madrid, having previously served as Associate Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and Coordinator of its Doctoral Commission in Surgery. He has supervised numerous doctoral theses, serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the US-based Fight Colorectal Cancer Foundation and coordinates international research into early-onset colorectal cancer. Author of more than 200 scientific publications and book chapters, he has received multiple national awards for colorectal research from the Spanish Association of Coloproctology.
