Dr. Alberto Acitores Cancela

Dr Alberto Acitores Cancela is a Consultant Neurosurgeon with specialist interests spanning spinal surgery, neuro-oncology, skull-base surgery and endoscopic treatment of pituitary disorders. He practises across several HM centres and forms part of the Dr Diamantopoulos Neurosurgery team, which provides multidisciplinary treatment for disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nervous system. Dr Acitores completed his specialist training in Neurosurgery at Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal in Madrid, a major Spanish teaching and tertiary referral hospital. He broadened his experience through a specialist rotation in paediatric neurosurgery at Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío in Seville. He later undertook a four-month international fellowship in Wisconsin, United States, working with Professor Mustafa K. Baskaya in vascular microsurgery and skull-base surgery. This advanced training strengthened his expertise in technically demanding procedures involving cerebral blood vessels, tumours and complex skull-base anatomy. His spinal practice includes the assessment and surgical treatment of degenerative, compressive and structural disorders of the spine. Within the MMG treatment portfolio, he performs procedures including discectomy, laminectomy and spinal fusion surgery, using microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques where clinically appropriate. His broader clinical expertise includes brain and skull-base tumours, pituitary adenomas, vascular neurosurgery and endoscopic endonasal surgery. During his training, he received an end-of-residency award from Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal and a grant from the Spanish Society of Neurosurgery to support further international study. Dr Acitores is also actively engaged in academic research. His ORCID record lists 15 scientific works, including studies involving more than 200 patients undergoing endoscopic surgery for pituitary adenomas. His publications examine surgical outcomes, tumour consistency, pituitary function and predictors of remission following surgery. He has also contributed to international research in skull-base and neuro-oncological surgery and serves as an instructor on advanced endoscopic surgical courses.
